Former world No.1 Jelena Jankovic says she is considering shutting down for the rest of the year after her latest injury concern in the first round of the Citi Open in Washington.
The veteran is seeking to get her career back on track but the injuries seem to hinder her.
Jankovic lost 4-6 6-3 2-0 to fifth seed OceaneDodin– her sixth loss in seven games. The 32-year old dismayed player said after the game she seriously considered a shutdown for the rest of the year.
“I will see how it’s going, but I will probably end the season soon. It’s not working. I haven’t made my decision yet. Maybe I will [in the US Open tournament]. I will give myself another chance to recover, but we’ll see,” she said.
The player, ranked no. 69 now, had high hopes for the Washington even rehabbing vigorously. She stopped for a few weeks to fully recover and was reportedly set to feature in a District game for the first time. However, it seems her persistent back injury got in the way again, as usual. Read more »
The Volvo Car Open event saw Samantha Stosur in a victorious win of the battle of former Charleston champions as she swept past Jelena Jankovic, former No.1 in straight sets.
With her victory thus far, Stosur advanced into the third round of the event in Charleston. Speaking after the match, she stated some of the sacrifices she had made to ensure her success and how it wasn’t easy to defeat Jelena.
“I’ve had eight hours of practice on clay courts, so all in all, I’m pleased with how I started the match and got through it in straight sets,” she said after the match.
“That’s not easy to do against Jelena; we’ve had some really long matches in the past, so I was glad to get through.”
The game ended in 6-1, 6-3, in favour of Stosur thus securing her place in the event’s third round.
The Serbia is coming off a solid run to the round of 16 at the Miami Open and faced a tough test in the person of Jankovic. The latter had previously led their head-to-head 7-2 and at the 2013 French Open, she had won their most recent encounter. Read more »

The Italian Open has proven to be challenging for Jelena.
But challenges are what build a champion and her fans can look forward to her other performances in many upcoming matches and tournaments. The Italian Open saw Jelena faces Eugenie Bouchard. It was tough as the first round it saw Eugenie get the better of Jelena. However, it is not to be forgotten that Jankovic won this very
tournament in clay courts in the two subsequent years, 2007 as well as 2008. She needs to spruce up her skills in order to reach quarter final levels.
Jelena is known to be a strategist in the court as she handles the balls as well as serves them. Hence, Eugenie had to go aggressive against her opponent in order to get a win. At the recent Italian Open Jelena might not have gotten her day in court, but her dress certainly did. Sponsored by Fila, it was a unique dress that stole the show.
