JANKOVIC DEFEATS MURGURUZA

Jelena Jankovic has defeated Garbine Muguruza of Spain in the second round of the French Open. Jankovic won the match in the straight sets by 6-3, 6-0.

Jankovic who has been given 18th seed in this tournament looked a bit out of touch in the first few games of the match, but, after that, she gathered her focus and played some tremendous shots to take her opponent apart.

In the post match interview, Jankovic said, “It’s nice to secure a big win in the first round match. It will set the tone nicely for the upcoming matches. I started a bit tentatively today, but, I tried to stay composed and managed to pulled thing back.  I am glad with my performance today.”

On the other hand, Muguruza was disheartened after losing the match. She said, “I got a fantastic start and I should have capitalized on that. But, I gave away too many easy points after that and lost the plot. It really hurts to end up on the losing side after having such a good start.”

In the first set, Jankovic started poorly. She dropped her serve in the 2nd game and lost the first three games in a row to get trailed by 0-3.

But, after that, Jankovic didn’t give her Spanish opponent any opportunity whatsoever. With the help of three serve breaks, she bagged the next 6 games successively and sealed the set by 6-3.

In the following set, Jankovic was even more aggressive. She got five break chances in that set and she cashed on three of them to register a bagel and wrap up the match.

In the next round, Jankovic will face the winner of the match between Samantha Stosur of Australia and Kristina Mladenovic of France.

JANKOVIC DEFEATS STOSUR

Jelena Jankovic has defeated Samantha Stosur of Australia in the first round of Porsche Tennis Grand Prix 2013. Jankovic won the match in the straight sets by 6-4, 6-4. The match went on for just 96 minutes.

The outcome of the match was surprising. It wasn’t expected as Stosur was higher in world rankings than Jankovic. But, Jankovic put up a great show on the clay courts of Stuttgart and knocked the Australian player out of the competition.

In the post match interview, Jankovic said, “Sam is a very good player on the clay courts and the last time I had played against her on clay courts, she had defeated me. So, that was in the back of my mind. I knew it would be tough for me, but, thankfully, I was in good touch today and the match went in my favour.”

“It always boosts your confidence when you win against a player who is in top 10 in the world rankings. This is certainly the kind of start that I needed. Hopefully, things will go well for me in the further matches as well.”

On the other hand, Stosur was looking totally frustrated. The Australian super star said, “It was really a tough day for me. I didn’t serve well at all and probably didn’t deserve to win.”

“I hadn’t expected myself to be out from the first round, but, it happens sometimes. I will keep working hard and will bounce back in the upcoming tournaments.”

Jankovic broke Stosur’s serve a couple of times in the match, once in each set.

In the first set, the Serbian player got the breakthrough in the 9th game and then, wrapped up the set by winning her next service game.

In the second set, Stosur dropped her serve in the 3rd game and never managed to come back after that. Jankovic held her remaining serve and made her way into the second round quite comfortably.

In the second round, Jankovic will face the local girl Sabine Lisicki.

KUZNETSOVA SNEAKS THROUGH

Jelena Jankovic has been defeated by Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open. Kuznetsova won the match by 0-6, 6-2, 7-5.

The way Kuznetsova had played in the opening set, very few people would have expected her to dominate in the next two sets. But, the Russian player did that. She looked a completely different player after losing the first set. Read more »
