Venus Williams Partners Sister to Doubles Glory
Serena Williams is not content with less of anything – this popular adage about the younger of the Williams sister proved to be true once again as she returned to partner her older sister Venus Williams less than 5 hours after clinching her 5th singles title Wimbledon to win the doubles title as well. The Williams sisters defeated the Czech pair of Lucie Hradecka and Andrea Hlavackova 7-5, 6-4 in the final at the centre court of the All England Club.
This is the fifth doubles title that the sisters have won together at the most famous Grand Slam event of the tennis calendar and it came just hours after Venus Williams was witness to her younger sister lifting her fifth singles title at centre court.
Speaking after the match, an elated Venus stated that the performances of her sister in her singles match was an inspiration for her, adding that it is always a pleasure playing with her and she couldn’t have done without the help of the younger Williams. The Williams sisters were the firm favourites to win the title according to the tennis betting online but they still had to close out the game.
Over the past two years, both the Williams sisters have had health issues that have threatened to end their careers but have returned each time to put an end to all the speculation about their future, but this comeback from the sisters is, by far, the most emphatic response to the critics. This was the first doubles tournament that the two have played together in over two years and the way they performed at centre court, it was as if they had been playing together all the time.
After Serena won the singles title, it was perhaps written in the stars that Venus Williams would finish off the match and she served for the match just 15 minutes before the clock striking 11pm local time, just in time for a fun post match presentation for the sisters.
If you’re thinking about having a bet on US Open 2012, you could do worse than backing the Williams sisters.
